The Temple's
previous incarnation was as Auckland’s only dedicated live original music
venue. We hosted some 25,000 performers during our eight year (1995 to
2003) lifespan. More importantly the Temple also spearheaded a vast
movement in the development of NZ music, providing extensive and invaluable
infrastructure, training, support and networks at a grass roots level in the
NZ music industry.
The Temple
was not only recognised by the music industry for its invaluable
contributions, but also by the hospitality industry and the business community
as a leader in its field.
Many
projects were undertaken and many achievements were accomplished during the
eight-year operation of the Temple. Some
of those include:
- A
twelve-month joint venture project involving mentoring a group of
musicians and emerging managers in the business of music.
This joint venture was between Auckland City Council, Community
Employment Group and the Temple. The
programme participants increased their earnings from music by an average
of 700% over the twelve-month period, and vastly improved their
performance, songwriting, professionalism, contacts and knowledge. A
number of toolkits were published, which are available for free download here.
- Spearheading
joint promotional initiatives with other venues promoting live original NZ
music.
- Staging
an annual song writing and performance competition, sponsored by the
prestigious York
Street Recording Studios. This
competition ran over four months each year, and was unique in the world of
“band competitions”. It
was structured to enable all entrants to follow a process to improve and
expand upon opportunities regardless of the outcome of the competition.
This involved mentoring, feedback, business plan construction,
press kit construction, and many other aspects.
- Hosting
many workshops on different aspects of musicians’ careers to assist
attendees in developing knowledge, skills and networks.
- The
Temple was nominated Best Comedy Venue at the 2002 NZ Comedy Awards and
Karen q Temple was nominated most supportive/ inspiring off stage person
at the 2003 NZ Comedy Awards.
- Attendance
at focus groups and frequent contribution into development of the Auckland
City CBD Plan and the Arts Agenda.
- Teaching
Business Studies at MAINZ
(Music and Audio Institute of NZ) 1997 to 2003.
- Developing
a business plan, in association with Auckland City Council and Community
Employment Group for the Killing Room, Auckland’s premiere rehearsal
studio.
- Delivering
at seminars for Devonport’s Depot Artspace, OMAC (Otara Music and Arts
Centre) and the Hamilton Community Arts Council
-
Staging events for the
following festivals and events:
