Anyway,
word on the street says Temple is a place of true Urban Legend!!! Great
site you have here ! Wish Los Angeles had something like this for Musician’s
! I came across the Temple
website today and was really impressed with all you are doing for NZ
musicians. I wish we had a
similar operation here in Ireland. My
Open Mic Experience at the Temple I’ve
played open mics around the world and I have to say that the Temple is truly
unique. I think I know at least
three good reasons why the Temple is so unusual. Original
music: I’ve never been anywhere
that brings out so many singer songwriters.
It feels like a musical version of those artist colonies of the
impressionist era—beginners and old bards alike, supporting each other,
learning from one another. From
teenage girls to old cranks like me, all in this thang together.
The Temple is the most original-music-oriented venue I know. Talent:
Here I believe that the Temple, and Auckland in general, is blessed with an
extraordinary number of talented songsmiths.
Both nights I played there was a mix of both seasoned performers and
first timers. And what they all
had in common, irrespective of technical expertise or stage fright, was good
songs and the earnestness to share them Warmth:
This, I think, is the main reason for the other two. Karen (whom I’ve never met, except by phone) has put
together a place that makes it easy to make a fool of yourself. I mean, that’s really what performing, and especially
performing original work, is all about— getting accustomed to letting other
people look inside your musical soul, poke and prod, and judge you on first
impressions, with full risk of coming off as a complete idiot. But somehow Karen has achieved a rare environment (it’s the
expensive, cleverly simulated 1960s Greenwich Village barroom atmosphere, I
think) that makes it natural, almost easy, to climb up there with your heart
on your sleeve and sing your guts out to a bunch of strangers.
And I can’t say enough about Rachelle, who was MC for the two nights
I played there. She kept
everything moving yet relaxed, kept the enthusiasm high, and was really,
really nice to everyone, whether we deserved it or not.
A gifted talent, she. Karen,
together with Rachelle, an outstanding bartender and some extremely supportive
regulars (I’m thinking of Gaille and Warren, in particular, though loyalty
runs strong among regulars) have made open mic at the Temple a unique musical
experience. Dave from Albuquerque I
checked out your website tonight, it's great and so musician friendly. I don't
think anyone in Australia has anything like it. I
am certainly impressed with your swift response. At least I know I am dealing
with a professional! Keep up the good work. And thanks heaps for providing me
with other contact details for venues!!! I
have heard great reviews from musicians from NZ that now live here in
Australia, and would like to pursue your venue a little more. I might use your
venue as a media launch venue (ie VIPs only) Congrats
also for holding "Poetry Slam"! I've heard about this American WWF-Poetry
from the Beat poet Anne Waldman when we did reading together here in Bali last
year. Seems to be a world-wide fashion now, this "Poetry Slam"
thing. Warm hello to all Temple
Worshippers! Why did I leave??????
your
the most supportive person i’ve meet...golly gosh.
Look what you’ve done for so many musicians...go you!
what
you’re doing at the temple is really wonderful. thanks for giving musicians
like me a chance on the stage, and fighting people like the noise police on
the behalf of everyone who loves music, especially kiwi music!!!! PS
we had a wicked gig on Sunday and
we’re hangin out for Thursday and Saturday.....thanks for having a rad venue
to do our music Have
heard great things about the Temple from musician friends such as Nigel Gavin
& Tony Waine. A
word of appreciation for what you’re doing for musicians - I’ve been
looking for gigs for almost a year now and absolutely nothing happened until I
stumbled on your notice board. Within a week I had 3 firm contacts, and I’m
meeting with some of those guys this weekend. Sweetazz... u rock! I
think you have the most effective mailing list in history! I
enjoy your emails and like keeping in touch with Temple News - you’re an
inspiration The
Temple as a venue has such an awesome atmosphere. The
level of support that you give to the music community is good to see And may
have helped to give us a nz music quota on the radio.
Keep it up a
week ago I was doing accapella and now I've gigs with a guitarist and looking
to expand. It started with you guys. We
just wanted to say what an awesome night we had on Friday with Graham Brazier
and Hammond Gamble. Well done, and looking forward to more like that. i
hope you remember me from the open mic last week. i think it’s an excellent
idea to have nights like that as it gives people a platform to perform.
I wanted to say thankyou soooooo much for all the names you gave me.
Already they have proved profitable. i went to Whitianga and rang Dave of the
eggsentric cafe and then i played there 5 nights in a row - it was fantastic!
i think maybe they’d had enough of me by the end but everyone there is
lovely - and mad. when i visit nz again, i shall definitely return there. As
a closet musician the York St Acid Test gave me the motivation to get some
friends together form a band and actually perform on stage. It provided us the
opportunity to aim towards something which was the catalyst to playing in a
regular band and we have now performed several times including back at the
Temple. It
was great to compete against other bands and get feedback from industry
professionals. I would highly
recommend the competition and hope that the Temple continues to provide this
opportunity for NZ musicians Best

behind the Acid Test. It has been an awesome experience. It is hard to believe
all that I have learnt and consolidated over these past weeks....and I know

Musicians. To
the Owner , I take my hat off to you, what a fantastic idea you have of
supporting new talent. We
had a ball!! And we’ll be back. Kindest
regards to you and your extremely helpful staff. You
rock. If
you ruled any more, people would lean stuff up against you to see how long
they were... If
you were any more onto it, you would be a switch that was constantly on and
never created with an off position. (Just
some slightly articulate encouragement lines I came up with. Thanks for your
support of NZ Music.) You
rule! You
have fantastic energy. Keep it up! Your
site is just “AWESOME”...of which i have spent most of the day on... :-)
and with the extensive list of contacts available...WOW. I won’t be going

guys! u all do great work for nz music! keep it up! Dear
Karen, I just wanted to let you know how much I admire the scope and depth of
the activities you organise. All strength to you Its
great to find a website specifically aimed at promoting NZ music. Its sad
enough seeing overseas music websites neglect NZ music, but its worse when NZ
sites do too. Well done Temple for helping out NZ’s music talent Firstly,
thanks for your great e-zine—very informative!! Hi
there Karen - I just thought I would let you know that I have had quite a
number of calls and emails from the snippet you put into your newsletter -
thanks! You obviously have a great network going, good on you.
No doubt we will have future projects growing out of these contacts - I
will keep you posted. Hi
Karen I just wanted to thank you
for a great night on Saturday. It was lots of fun, especially, Tim, the MC,
who kept everything rolling along. I really enjoyed the auctions, I ended up
with the Hello sailor and Karen Hunters CD’s. We also enjoyed Friday night
with Stan Malcolm. It was the first time we’ve been to the Temple, but it
definitely won’t be the last!!! Thanks
again, for such a good venue, and for promoting NZ music.
Thanks
for keeping it real and giving young bands a place to play. I
think your website is cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just
wanted to say that this is the most fabulous thing I’ve discovered - you
guys that is and all your grand efforts to promote and inform - great stuff.
Have forwarded it to several folk :)
Just
wanted to say a big thank you for having us last night, and for the support
and warm welcome we received - we had an awesome time!! Next visit, though, we will make sure we can stay till the
end of the evening and catch all performers on the night, we were sorry to
have had to any of them.....! I
sure hope you can manage to keep up the incredibly good work you are doing,
Karen, it is really hard and frustrating stuff at times (I can really
relate!!!) but it is such an important and worthy thing you do.
I know the musicians and performers ALL appreciate it....
But, just wanted you to know that this bunch of people really
appreciate it to - so take care won’t you? Hi
Karen, How
are you? I had such a great night on Tuesday at your awesome bar the Temple.
What a great job you are doing supporting nz music and writing the magazine
and running open nights so us artist have a place to perform, and all the
other things it takes to run a bar, you certainly have a lot of energy, well
done Anyway,
I love getting the Temple ezines, and look forward to being there again!
Hey
thanks for all the cool work you and your people do for the Kiwi music scene!!
Every now and then we hear from someone who’s found us through your site! Thanks
for your great support of Kiwi Music. You Rule! Great
site! Awesome to see a club supporting live kiwi bands! The
Temple is the BEST live music pub in Auckland by far!
You
guys rock for not only supporting nz music, but for supporting students as
well, and giving them a break Karen,
thanks again for everything you have done so far - the contacts I have made
and opportunities that have come along since I got involved with the Temple,
have just been fantastic. What
you do is very special - we really appreciate it! You
really do heaps for NZ music and put in the hard slog.
Good on ya gal. Thanks
heaps for putting our gig details in the ezine - I reckon it is an extremely
generous and inspired thing you are doing, an expansive energy in what, as we
all know, can be an extremely aggressive and self-interested industry....thank
you, Karen. Kia kaha! Aroha nui Thank
you for the opportunity to explore my craft at the Wed 7.00 slot.
The experience has definitely enriched my playing and performing. I
currently operate a CD Replication and Audio Mastering facility.
I was at Karen Hunters release party
at "The Temple" last friday night. After being there, I
realised how strongly your venue was involved in developing and assisting N.Z
performers and artist. Hey
Karen, Thank
you so much!! Thank
you for your support of local music too, keep up the great work. Hi
Karen, You guys do such great work up there supporting New Zealand music, good
on ya. Keep it coming. PS
Keep doing your E-Zine - it's the best music email going!!! You need to be
subsidised. Karen,
many thanks for giving me a stage. My work permit for Fiji has come through
and I’m departing later this month. I’m going to miss the music scene
here. All strength to your arm! Thank
you so much and your site is so cool too! The
ezine is a great source of information for muso’s in NZ Thanks
Karen you are doing an
extraordinary thing for the music industry. Karen,
I find being at the Temple gives me inspiration to learn how to express myself
(mistakes included) (-: From when I first heard Gaille with her beautiful
heart-felt songs (with inner soul), and felt the supportive atmosphere that is
given at this special venue, I knew I was a lucky man to be there. Nothing is
perfect and there must be some trying times in providing such a concept of a
NZ original music bar, however Karen I wanted to express my appreciation to
you, Gaille etc in the genuine effort put in- it does get noticed! and we all
grow from its strength. Temple
is the best lil bar in town, Karen makes the best vodkas and two beers for
five bucks happy our is just what we all need after a hard days work.
We love you Temple!!!!! i
like what you guys have got going there.....good stuff! Karen
is worthy of the respect and admiration of her peers in the entertainment
industry. Her enduring and
continuous effort in supporting Kiwi music and performing arts is a credit to
her. I wish her all the success and reward for the arduous hours put in over
the years. karen
(dear)-i feel to write this note on account of i appreciate getting all the
info (and one day hope to use it myself) and was thinking about the work that
you put into it and as far as i know unpaid and want to let you know i think
you’re doing an excellent job for both musos and venues and your efforts are
priceless and certainly not in vain and i hope will be one day rewarded in
kind to you-me myself am working on writing and rehearsing and hopefully by
years end will have some sort of show to ‘off’ and maybe could even score
a set or such at the temple myself-once again thanks i
have heard that the temple is a really good place to listen to some good kiwi
music, so i hope to come soon and have a look I
think that this site is really awesome, especially for us muso’z out here.
So we can see that NZ music is actually going somewhere, and that we
(the little people) can have an avenue and/or a place to go for info, gigs
etc. Pretty much every thing for
the starving musician. All
my support It's
been really nice communicating with you about all this, Karen - it's certainly
helped me think through a few issues to do with my own musical direction this
year. I really appreciate your
approachableness as a person and the sense of hospitality you give at the
TEMPLE - something you just don't find everywhere.
Let's keep in touch. As
a regular customer I am proud to be supporting the Temple....keep it up! you
go girl!!! fabulous objectives!!! one thing though, do you do this alone? is
so, ima call you superwomen!!! Very
informative Ezine indeed. Thank
you for letting me come & play last night - I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It sounded even better than the bathroom, to me, and I still managed to
get up at 5am! from
the hearty hardy folkette from the Wairarapa
Masterton to be more precise
....congratulations for taking the initiative
for standing and supporting New Zealand
performers ,...I
will be travelling up to the big smoke
regularly this year so
would like to be informed of the latest haps.....who knows I may even drop by and play
too.... ten

need people like you to support people like
us and vice versa Karen,

<grin> Hi
Karen, Just to say thanks for being such a good supporter of local music ....
you guys are fookin’ greeeeeaaaat!!! : You
guys are LEGENDS!!! Thankyou for
providing a venue that’s not too scary a prospect to fill, in a great
location your
club seems to be one of the coolest places in nz I’ve
been coming to the Temple for only a short time, yet already feel right at
home there, nice staff, good music, lovely atmosphere. It’s
Geri here, I played the other night at the open mike night, I just thought
that i’d drop you a line telling you that i think you do a great job
encouraging young performers to ‘get up and have a go’.
I think it is really essential at the moment in New Zealand to keep our
cultural identity alive through original music.
The more original music is exposed the less phobic people may get, and
that’s what’s so great about the Temple! So basically the reason why i
told you this is cos i believe that it’s really important and you are one of
the few people i’ve ever met who has been encouraging, supportive and most
importantly positive towards the original music that the youth of auckland and
NZ are playing. Thanks
Karen Temple for your great energy and commitment I
am a singer/songwriter and I am very happy to be back home after living in Syd/Mel
& Brisbane for the last 5 years. The
support here for original music is fantastic ... you are doing a great job!! Hey
Karen, Thanks
heaps!!!!!!! Last night was rad, thanks, still buzzing, man its so nice to
have somewhere to play where audiences allow you to do your own songs y'know?. YAY! You do a
wonderful job and have a cool bar, should be proud Checked
out the site, great work guys, Keep it up! thanks
for information especially the ezine, have got heaps out of it!! karen,
thanks for all your wonderful emails. I do read them, and look forward to
visiting you cafe again soon. Its a great venue, and I think you're providing
a wonderful service. keep up the good work. I

down and have a couple of drinks in a relaxed atmosphere with decent music Hi
Karen! Just a really quick e-mail to say WAY COOL!!! I
checked out the Temple last Thursday, when meeting a drummer there & was
blown away by some of the wicked original stuff that was played. Loved it!
ahhhh
thanks alot. you’ve helped me a heap, its really hard finding help. I
think this website is pretty cool and i like what you are doing for N.Z bands
26/9/00 We
meant to get to you in Auckland but as usual I missed out on even seeing two
of my best mates through just trying to get all the ground covered in
Auckland!! Thank you for your words of encouragement!! I think ya have to be
proactive as there is no use sitting around waiting for the barstards to knock
on your door!! Because they never will!! Temple
is an excellent place with
good pace keep
on going rock’n
rolling there’s
enough space. this
is a great site, shitloads of good links and info.
keep up the good work!! Mihi
o te wa ki a koutou mo to koutou kaha ki te waea mai e pa ana ki nga roopu
whakatangitangi ka tae atu ki te temepara. He mihi ano tenei ki nga kaimahi o
te po e kaha ana ki te awhina ki te tautoko hoki i nga tangata o waho. No
reira, anei tetahi whakatauki hei kiko i nga korero; Whaia te iti kahurangi,
ki te tuohu koe me he maunga teitei!! We
have just received some great news the band 59south are on the AC Listings for
NZ ON AIR and they are playing it in Canterbury, thank-you for your contact
there in Christchurch, they love it. The
website honestly is very good and a real model for what is possible with some
energy and vision. hi
Karen just wanted to thank you for giving a great interview. i really appreciate the time you set aside for me.
i think that you are doing a
brilliant thing for unknown musicians in new zealand.
good luck for the rest of the competition. What
a fantastic place!!! The ability
to provide for such a wide range of artists (forms and standards) is a rare
one in Auckland today. Also such
a warm and welcoming environment Fantastic
venue! Keep up the good vibe.
it is so rare to find such a supporting place for musicians and artists
to go and perform. Just
wanted to give some big thumbs up to you for doing such excellent work for NZ
Music. These Ezines have been
more than interesting and informative and just wanted to show some
appreciation I
attended the Jazz night, Tuesday just gone and as a first timer at your
cafe/bar I was really impressed and had an awesome time.
It's great that someone has been so open minded to create a place where
a diverse range of people can go and have a bomb.
The atmosphere is buzzing with good vibes and times - was also
surprising to see lots of young 'uns out there, getting in on the act and
performing/giving support. Lovn
it. I believe I will come to the
poetry night, as I would love to hear and share thoughts and passions and
dreams with everyone else - excellent idea - people these days rarely have
time or find it difficult to express themselves, so good on ya for giving us
an opportunity to share and explore our minds and world.
