Key issues to raise in a letter

Procedure under current legislation

That measurements be taken from the property of the complainant

That noise control complaints about live venues are not dealt with by Armourguard Officers

That the policies within the Arts Agenda are adhered to.

That council puts controls in place to ensure complaints are genuine and are not fraudulent or vexatious .

That Auckland City Council (and all councils) deal with the noise control issues in a responsible manner, bearing in mind

  • The importance of the arts

  • The effect their actions have on people's lives

  • The commerciality of the situation, people's livelihood's are at stake:  musicians, live venue staff, live venue proprietors

That Auckland City Council (and all councils) and central government, set up appropriate dialogue with key stakeholders (musicians, venue owners, music industry members, residents), and allow legal representation of those key stakeholders, to address this issue responsibly.

That real estate agents are required to fully disclose the disadvantages of living in a city, which is inherently noisy.

Changes to legislation

That the current imposed noise limit of 55-65db (which is less than the average conversation, and 5-25 decibels less than the ambient noise level on Queen Street) are raised to a realistic level

Developers are required to effectively soundproof apartments

That there be a procedure that sets down how noise complaints at live venues are handled (currently the legislation makes no distinction between a complaint about a live venue and a complaint about, say, a private party), negotiated in an appropriate manner with key stakeholders (musicians, venue owners, music industry members, residents)
